Couldn't stop coughing and sneezing yesterday. I hate being sick. Ran the 1600m run in the slow heat again not knowing what to expect time-wise, but I PR-ed again.  I must have really sucked last year.

Good Job. The great thing about running is you are always in competion with yourself. Pr's are awesome they come in many ways. Not just as you race. Achieve your workout goals and more Pr's will follow. Recently a friend said "Train hard and Race easy." It makes sense. Last year you didn't suck, I bet your more fit and know what to expect this you. Have a fun season.

Ally I wouldn't say you sucked last year - but you have just really hit a great stride this year and it is because of two things: your hard work and effort, and your positive attitude. Keep them both up and your season is going to be great!

Still sick but feeling a lot better.  Ran Bank Run by my lonesome, except for the first half mile or so.  Started slowing down quite a bit on the last uphill mile.  It was nice going my own pace though.  Since I don't have a car anymore I just ran home because I couldn't find Jeff to give me a ride.

Speed work today.  Ran 4 1200s, which is kind of a weird distance but it was actually pretty nice. I was supposed to be aiming for 4:45ish but didn't quite make it.

1- 4:38

2- 4:52

3- 4:52

4- 4:54

The first one went pretty fast but my legs tensed up after and I felt like I was pushing harder to go slower.  Still sick so I couldn't breathe out of my nose which made it a little tougher also.

pm- I was going to go on an easy run with Hazel my nasal, but I went and played soccer with the crew so I thought that would count for at least a mile (even though Zac might disagree because I "suck at soccer" and apparently wasn't doing much to help my team... oh well.)

Anaerobic threshold.  Sounds painful, yeah?  It actually wasn't that bad and it was even a little fun.  Ran about a mile towards the school on 2450 to get to track practice but Jeff pulled over and picked me up before I actually got there.

For the "anaerobic threshold" thing we ran 4 miles with the middle 3 miles at cross-country race pace.  I did pretty alright, I thought I was going to be running with Zac but I pulled ahead of him at the first and he never caught up to me.  I passed Nikki J and got pretty close to Willy but just stayed the same distance behind him until I was done.  Ran the middle "3" in 18:15 but I am wondering how long it actually was, probably about 2.7 or 2.8.

Hills!  Ran out to sunset tire hill with Jeff Ruth Josh Adam and Derrik (about 1.5 mi).  Ran the hills mostly by myself.  I was surprised at how much easier it was to run the hills compared to last time.  Last time I would stop in the middle of the hill but this time the only time I stopped was at the top and the bottom.  I must be getting in shape!  I did 5 hills, and I think the fourth one was probably the hardest but they all were pretty alright. The hill is about a quarter of a mile long.  I ran back with Josh and Jeff.

You will not have many more days like that with the Fast Running Blog. At least it would be difficult to have them when you know the world is watching. Since you've started, your blog has had 159 unique visitors with 220 page views and visitors from Utah, London, Idaho, Colorado, Mississippi, New York, Georgia, Virginia, Vermont, and California.

What helps me get my run in on a difficult day is the minimum daily mileage quota. I do not lay down in bed unless I've met that goal. If it is 10 pm, and I am not there, then I go out and do the balance. I actually very rarely find myself running after 10 pm because I know I would have to if I do not get in my run earlier. A simple thing, but I believe it can make a world of difference in your race performances.

I actually did a warm-up today, one lap around the track.  I should probably get into that habit.  I went on an easy 5-miler out to Green Springs with Ruth and Nikki J.  We were going at a pretty slow pace and I stopped at the golf course clubhouse and at a couple of lights.  I wasn't feeling really mentally strong today until the turnaround point and then I started getting into it.  When done with the run I did nine 100 meter striders.  After that I lifted weights... I would log that but I don't know what the machines are called or how much weight I was actually lifting.  So today was pretty nice; I guess its kind of a prep day for speedwork tomorrow.  I'm going to be running in spikes for the first time, so that will be interesting.

Ditto about that run, the first half sucked, but the downhill at the end felt nice. Thanks for reminding me to bring my spikes. I had already forgotten. oops. Oh and about the machines' names, I don't know most of them either, but I just kinda describe the lift and that works. At least then I'll know what I did. I heart you!

Pain. I ran in spikes for the first time today and now I have to walk like a penguin.  I did a 400 m warm up with Amanda, then strapped on my spikes and started on some 1000 meters.  My times:

1- 3:40

2- 3:59

3- 3:57

4- 3:57

5- 3:51

We did those plus a 400m jog in between.  I felt like I was pushing on most of the repeats.  I usually fly on the first repeat of any set probably just because I have the most energy then.  That was also my first time running in spikes and I was trying to learn how to run in them.  They pulled me right up onto my toes (thus the aching calves) and I ran the first one like that, but I couldn't keep it up for the other ones, so I would save toe running for when I needed an extra push.  It was a little disappointing getting 19 seconds slower on the second one but I felt like I was doing okay, especially because I never did worse than the second repeat.  The wind was blowing pretty hard which made it a little more difficult, but helped when it was behind me.  It was blowing hardest on the last repeat, but I was working harder so I got faster (which upped my esteem a little bit).  We were supposed to do a 3/4 mile cool down but I forgot and just went home.

I like cheesy potatoes

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Mar 21, 2007 at 20:36:43

I think there are two things that kill young athletes - spikes and track. Mileage is ok, as long as you do not go too crazy on it, especially for girls - I think girls can and should start pushing the mileage a bit sooner than boys. But spikes and track can really kill the biomechanics of a growing body and cause some serious injuries later on. Running in flats and not being used to the track may cost you maybe 5 seconds per mile in one race, but you will get it back by being stronger, injury free and running with better form later on.

Ally - you should try to work on your sense of pace, as well possibly on the ability to distinguish the true signals of fatigue from a mere illusion. It is not that you do not have the endurance to run steady splits in a workout like this. But for some reason it is not happening. Possibly you are losing concentration, or paying too much attention to some irrelevant indicator that tells you to slow down. Wind can be a big distraction.

a.m.- Met Ruth and Amanda up at the school for a morning run.  Killer pain in my calves.  I jumped out of bed this morning (because I have a bunkbed and have to jump off) forgetting how bad my calves hurt.  Not such a pleasant thing to wake up to.  I ran a lap warm-up and then we headed out for Arctic Circle (3 mi).  I ran with Ruth most of the way, my calves eased up a little while running.  We ran a little slow on the way out and then got up to a more decent pace on the way back.  The blister I got yesterday popped when I was running back but almost done.

afternoon- Anaerobic threshold on Dogpound run (4).  Ran a warm-up up to Harts with Nikki J. and Ruth.  Ruth headed out on the threshold run first, then Nikki, and I was still waiting for my mind to will me to go.  I started it out pretty decently, even though I didn't feel really fast.  I caught up to Nikki J at about the Relief Society Building, after that I didn't really have anyone to try and catch up to, so that made the run a little trickier because I had to keep checking my pace.  At the dogpound I was at about 12 minutes something, which is about a minute or so faster than last time.  My finishing time was 17:59, 16 seconds faster than last time.  I must have slowed down a bit on the hills, but overall I felt the run went okay and I'm pretty happy with my time.  After that I jogged back super slow to the school, and then sat on the turf and checked out all my new blisters.  I have two decent sized ones, and two toenails are coming off.

Easy run day before the race tomorrow.  It was supposed to be a 35 minute run, but I went running by myself during seventh period and got started a little late so I cut the run short so I could be back before practice started.  I ran for 26 minutes, and it was painful. I just ran around the neighborhoods by the school and it was neat just being able to go wherever I wanted.  My calves were still killing me today and so it was hard to even want to go running.  When I run fast I can't really feel my calves, but on this easy run I could feel them like none other.  I stopped once to stretch them out a little.  Overall I liked just being out by myself and being able to go wherever I wanted.  That kind of freedom is nice after so many course runs and track work.

I don't know what was up with this day.  I ran the 1600 m in the second heat (I think?) out of three.  My calves were still aching but they felt a lot better so I wasn't even too worried about my race.  I think I should have been a lot more worried because I did 9 seconds worse than last time.  I tend to run a lot harder if I am nervous anyways.  So the first lap of the mile went by really fast, in about 1:18, and I got out in front and it felt really good, but I didn't hold it and I fell back a lot in the second lap.  Nikki J even passed me once and I was ashamed because I knew I wasn't pushing it hard enough.  So my second lap was crap, and my third and fourth laps weren't much better.  I needed to focus more on my pacing and plan out the race before hand.  There was also a bit of wind, especially on the last leg of the fourth lap.  That might have brought up my time a bit, but overall I think I just wasn't into it mentally and I wasn't running it smart.  I walked off the track disappointed and embarrassed, and I didn't do even close to my best.

Race: Pine View Invitational (2 Miles) 12:57:00, Place overall: 21

I did a lot better today than I did yesterday.  I first ran the 3200 m in the second heat.  I tried to plan it out a little bit beforehand because I thought that would be a good idea after crapping the mile yesterday.  I ran this race a lot smarter.  I started out okay and then got into a settled (but pushed) pace pretty quickly; my thoughts were to get into a spot and work my way up from girl to girl.  My plan didn't work out the way I wanted it to because I ended up running in a pretty big gap.  I did work my way around one girl and then I kept my eyes on the next girl that was about 100m in front of me for the rest of the time.  I ran the mile in a decent pace but I didn't push it too hard because last time thats what I did and I died on the fifth lap.  The fifth lap was good to me this time and I felt like I was going at a constant pace for most of the race.  I had a hard time pushing it in at the end because my legs were sore and worked and I just didn't feel like I had enough energy to sprint.  Overall it was a good race, improved by 17 seconds, but I still feel kind of disappointed that I'm not faster than I am.  I know it is kind of a harsh thought but I feel like I am one of the slow girls and I am very unsatisfied with myself.

The 800 was sort of an adventure... I haven't run this race since I was a freshman so it was kind of a new experience.  Ruthie gave me some pointers on how to run it before the race started and let me wear her racing flats.  I ran in the first heat (slow heat) and I took the lead from the start.  I ran the first lap fairly fast and felt myself slowing down after I started coming around the second time.  I kept telling myself to push it harder because I had less than a lap left, but I my distance-running self didn't like that idea.  I kept trying to speed it up but it was hard, especially because my legs still felt a little overworked.  I got passed right about at the start of the last 100 meters and ended up second in my heat.  I wasn't really disappointed in this race but I sure wasn't proud.  I didn't really know what to think of my time and walked off the track thinking, "hmm that was interesting".  It was fun just jumping in and running it but I still feel unsatisfied with myself.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 21:13:08

Some thoughts: first congratulations on a PR. In order to improve, you will need to be more consistent in training. Start with putting in more easy miles. I will join your coach in bugging you about quality warm-up and cool-down. They should be at least 2 miles each. This will take care not only of injury prevention, but also will help you build your endurance. Also, it is very important to be consistent. You should not end a day until you've run at least 6 miles total. This means if it is 11 PM on a cold nasty stormy day and you are at 3 miles for the day, you go out for another 3 to reach your goal. Going more is fine if you feel good, but a working day (Mon-Sat) should never end until you've run 6.

The fact that you could open with a 1:18 lap thinking you were running a mile means that with proper endurance you should be running no slower than 5:30. That endurance will come primarily from building a quality base, and then to follow up, tempo runs, and moderate amount of sharpening speedwork.

From Ruth on Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 18:52:57

You really are awesome, Ally, I really love being able to train with you, you've been such a great running buddy this whole year and I'll miss you SO much next year. I love you! (Look at my response to your comment on Saturday):)

am- met ruth up at the school at 5:30, ran two warm up laps then headed to arctic circle (3 mi).  I noticed that right under my right calf is really sore, and the left side of my left calf.  As I ran my left leg felt better but my right leg felt worse.

afternoon- had nothing to do during seventh period so I ran home (1 mi) and then chilled for a minute. Then had my mom drop me back off at the school for practice.  I ran 2 warm up laps, then a big grass loop (.5 mi) and then we started on our speedwork.  We did two sets of five 200m sprints with a 100 m jog in between. I was supposed to be aiming for 40 seconds. My first set went like so:

1- 37 sec

2- 39 sec

3- 39 sec

4- 40 sec

5- 41 sec

I'm not sure if thats exactly accurate, but thats the jist of it. My second set:

1- 37 sec (ran in spikes)

2- 36 sec (changed out of spikes and ran this in my regular shoes)

3- 39 sec

4- 38 sec

5- 39 sec

I tried running in spikes on the last set but I decided that I don't really know how to run in them correctly and that they are probably doing me more damage than good (plus I hate them), so I changed back into my normal shoes and still did pretty well.  I felt like I wasn't doing a stupid i-ran-the-first-lap-really-fast-and-now-i-am-slow-for-the-rest-of-the-repeats thing, and it felt good to be consistent.  Doing 200s was sort of an adventure also, because it is such a short distance.  After I did a cool down around the school (I'm guessing a little more than .5?). Overall it was a pretty good workout, I felt good today.

Anaerobic threshold today.  Ran during seventh period by myself so I could come home and hang out with my Australian family.  I ran a 2 lap warm-up and then headed out to dogpound (4mi).  The three middle miles were the threshold miles.  Running it by myself was different because I had no one to keep my sights on.  It was pretty windy today, I generally love running in the wind because I don't focus as much on myself and I feel a bit more free.  The wind didn't bother me until I turned right at the dogpound, then it got a little hard to run against.  Mid-way up the first hill there was a massive onslaught of wind and I felt like I was inching my way slowly up the hill.  It eased up a little on the second hill but it was still pretty windy.  My time was 18:19, 4 seconds slower than the first time I ran this.  I jogged back up to school and went on a cool down, 2 miles on middle school run.  Overall I felt pretty good today except for leg soreness.

am- met ruthie up at the high school at 5:30 for a nice morning run.  warmed up with 2 laps around the track, stretched a little and then we headed to arctic circle (3mi).  my left foot was hurting pretty bad until i got warmed up a bit and then i couldn't feel it as much.  We took it really easy today because of the track meet tomorrow.  It was a bit chilly but not bad; i wore long spandex and a jacket.  It was nice running at a slower pace.

afternoon- best run ever.  we were in hurricane for region solo and ensemble, so after we performed me and ruthie went on a run and kept track of miles thanks to her sweet watch.  We ran two warm up laps on the track and then headed out for a wherever-the-heck-we-want five miler.  My left foot has been acting very stupidly, it hurts on the left side on the top and sometimes i have to limp run because of it, especially when i turn left.  the run was awesome though; we ran past some horses, over a wooden bridge, through an orchard, and as we were turned around at our designated (by a cone) turnaround point the wind hit us and it was raining pretty good.  We ran back through the orchard in the rain and came back to hurricane high school.  there was stick that had gone all the way through ruth's shoe.

Today was not my day.  I ran the 1600m after running a slow 2 miles by myself before the meet and a 3 lap warm up at the meet.  Got new shoes today (asics 2120) and I ran this race in them.  They hurt a little because of the newness but were better than my other shoes would have been.  My left foot still hurts pretty bad, I keep getting told it should ease up because I got new shoes, so here's hoping.  It was a little windy but my time was pitiful even for there being wind.  One second slower than last meet where there was harder wind, and 10 seconds slower than my PR (which wasn't incredibly hard for me to get at the time...)

Grass loop warm-up (.5 mi) and then the 3200, which was worse.  Ruth paced me and I wore her racing flats.  I felt pretty fast, and I felt good like I was really workin it and that I was doing better.  The wind was gone and I felt like I was gonna make a good time.  I had moments where it was hard to keep my pace but overall I felt better than I usually do in the 2-mile, and I didn't absolutely die on the fifth lap.  When I finished I was actually surprised at my time and I couldn't talk to anyone for at least five or six minutes (I actually yelled at Kareena), and thats why when ruth said "let's run the 4x4!"  i was completely up for it because i felt like i had a choice of either throwing something really hard at someone or running a lap really hard to get rid of my anger.  I forgot to do my cool down after but who cares, i am done.

Sometimes its one of those days. The mile was nothing to be ashamed of. That wind is tough. On the two, I know you were working, but I think you would have gone faster if you were racing someone - of course it was a race, but it almost seemed like a time trial for you, with Ruth pacing. You're ready for some quicker times. We'll get a good week and a half of workouts and mileage in and you'll run well at the next meet. 4-5 miles Friday. 8 miles Saturday.

a.m.- met ruthie and green up at the track at 5:30, ran a two lap warm up and headed to arctic circle (3mi).  My foot is not good at all, it started hurting by the end of my warm up and was doing significantly worse by the middle of my run.

afternoon- two lap warm up, my foot wasn't doing any better.  I ran around barefoot in the softball field for a while, probably getting in a good half mile.  My foot is awkward to run on and it feels really weak.  I am icing it right now, probably for about 15- 20 min.

Didn't run at all even though there was a track meet.  Small confession:  It has been nice having a break from track, stresswise and all.  It let me get a lot of stuff done with a lot less to worry about.  Although I think I am about done with this pathetic little break of mine.  I feel lazy and not as healthy.  I feel like one of "those" people, you know, the people who don't run and I feel lame because I am not out there working my butt off every day.  Hopefully I can get back into it by the end of this week.

Insane race today.  It was pretty hot outside but I felt like I prepared well by staying hydrated.  I was really nervous for this race so I actually planned out splits and even what I needed to run each 100 meters in to meet my goal (5:49).  I ditched the looking-at-my-watch-every-lap plan and ended up getting a better time anyway. I beat some girls who have been beating me all year so that upped my esteem!  I guess I just really wanted it today.  Afterwards I got a bad headache and puked a couple times (heat exhaustion?) and I am nervous for my race tomorrow.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, May 11, 2007 at 14:54:49

Congratulations on the effort and the PR. 5:45 is a very good level. However, I believe your potential is much higher, especially in longer races. To reach it would require some training discipline, though. Like most high schoolers, you will benefit very much from a solid aerobic base, something that is very typical of a high school runner to neglect. I would recommend for the start to set up a rule for yourself that the day does not end, you do not go to sleep in other words until you've run at least 5 miles for the day. After a couple of weeks, make it 6, then 7, 8, 9, etc. If you can do this for a year, it is very likely that 5:45 will become your 5 K pace, and your mile time will be under 5:20.

First day of the Wasatch Back Relay!

Run 1 was 6.9 miles on Leg 6, rated very hard even though it didn't seem like it should be.  First mile and half was a gradual uphill and one kind of tough hill.  I passed an ultra-er guy and a guy that said he was a biker not a runner.  There was about 3 or so miles of intense downhill after that on dirt with switchbacks and not very good footing.  I passed about four people on the way down.  When I got to the bottom my legs felt a little fatigued but not bad.  The finish was farther than I thought it was going to be though but I still pushed to the end.  I passed two more people after the hill and overall I felt like I did a good job on this run.

Biked some to loosen up my legs.

Run 2 was a night run on Leg 18.  Started at about 11:00 pm, I have never run this late at night before! This run was 5.7 miles and rated Hard.  It was harder than my first run, very hilly.  It seems like it is a lot easier to run at night however because it is nice and cool and you can't see the hills you are running up.  I think I passed about eight people on this run.  There were a lot of intense hills and one ginormous hill at the end.  I felt like I pushed it hard and did well again.  It is fun running at night even though I did get a little spooked.

Race: Wasatch Back Relay day 2 00:00:00
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
3.600.003.60

Last leg of WBR!  Leg number 30, 3.6 miles long and rated Easy.  Started out kind of fast but I slowed down a little after a bit.  This run was fun, it felt like cross-country all over again.  Started out on dirt then went into some neighborhoods and finished by a school.  I passed nine people on this run.  It was nice running an easy one after two hard ones, and my legs didn't feel completely shot yet either by this time.

Overall I think my favorite run was probably the night run, because it was something I had never really experienced before.  The whole WBR was just really an adventure and I definitely want to do another relay sometime, maybe someday an ultra.

Way to go Allie! You really did a fantabulous job, especially how you ran those hard runs so well! And beat me on your second leg - even when I was biking! You're amazing and we definitely need to do this again next year. I'm glad I got to run with you and the pals and party on!

I guess this was my initial "getting back into shape" run.  Met up with PVHS XC and ran Washington Parkway,  Ran with Rob for the first mile and a little bit, then ran the rest alone.  I stopped to walk a bit because of a mix of out-of-shapedness and mentality.  So it was kind of hard today but hopefully this will make it easier to run for the rest of the week!

Ran with PVXC again.  Did the Washington loop, from Washington Elem. to Zions bank and down that other one road back to the elem. school.  Ran with Fenja most of the way.  It was a recovery run day so it was just a nice run.  I stopped once at the top of the firestation hill to wait for Fenja, cuz she was feeling sick.

I keep not wanting to wake up to go to XC, so I woke up a couple hours later and went to the gym and ran 5 miles on the treadmill.  My running time was 39:00, which evens out to be 7:48 minute miles I think??  If I did that right then thats faster than I usually run.  But it is a lot cooler in the gym and I didn't use any incline so maybe that is why.  I burned 585 calories, wahoooo.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Missed XC again and I didn't feel like going to the gym so I just ran in the heat.  Left a little past noon.  Ran down past the temple and old hospital and down to 700 south. Turned left, ran down to river road, turned left, ran up to Fab Freddie's and stopped for a drink and to cool off.  Then ran down 100 south until I got back to 200 east then just ran back to my house.  It was really hot but I think I did okay, and I only stopped once which is really good improvement since Monday.  I left my watch running at Freddie's so I am guessing my running time was about 35 minutes.  I am guessing I ran about four miles, I think I'll clock it later.

Just remembered, hip flexor was acting up a lot yesterday but it felt okay today, so it was okay during my run but I did some strengthening exercises afterward

I went on the foremaster six miler but I was such a big wussie today that I am only counting five miles.  The first two miles I felt great and then I kept stopping and each time I started running again I felt heavy and more sluggish.  And then I started feeling sick and started being an even bigger wuss and so I walked backwards up foremaster hill instead of running it.  Then my mouth got all parched and I felt dehydrated so I walked some more.  I probably walked about a full mile this run.  I think my suckiness of today has to do with that ice cream I ate last night, how I didn't eat anything before my run today, how hot it was, how I am not in the shape I would sometimes like to think I am, and how sometimes I am a baby when it comes  to hard runs.  Overall this run pretty much kicked my butt!

Today was a really good run.  I ran with PVXC again on the dogpound loop.  I ran by myself most of the way and wasn't too far behind Decker.  I felt great on the first few miles and the last couple were hard because of the hills so I slowed down a bit and Decker got farther ahead, but I was still running good.  I felt sick afterwards I think because of what I ate yesterday.  Hip flexor is feeling good, I've been doing strengthening excersizes so hopefully it doesn't give me a problem again.

Ran with PVXC this morning.  Ran by myself most of the way.  We did a 5 miler through a little of the neighborhood in Washington then out on the dirt to the Washington Parkway roundabout, then out past that, jumping a couple fences until a random turnaround point, then back.  I had one major stop to rest, the others were to figure out how to get past the fences.

Then ran on the treadmills at work after I was done working.  Ran 3.1 miles to see what it feels like to run that distance.  My time was 22:49.  It was tough trying to run fast for a distance.

This run was on a really good course, I thought, because it was downhill most of the way.  It was really cool outside too which was nice.  I started out pretty fast and passed a couple guys and got passed by a couple guys and eased into my place.  I was trying to put a lot of effort into this race.  So I got second woman to a girl I used to beat in XC which kind of ticked me off.  She probably has trained more than me though.  Overall I felt like it was a good run.

The last two days I just felt super lazy and I didn't run at all.  So today was starting out to be a day like that and then I started feeling ashamed for not being dedicated to my sport and for just being a wimp overall.  I decided to go run the sunset tire foremaster six miler run because last time I ran it that run kicked my booty, so I wanted to sort of overcome that.  I did a lot better this time and only really stopped once which was at the top of foremaster hill for a drink from the hose.  My knee had been killing me lately so I think that the two days off may have helped some because I could hardly feel it today.  I am also starting to get sick I think, which isn't good, but I will rest up and drink lots of orange juice tomorrow.

PVXC was at a meet so I slept in this morning.  I kept telling myself all day I was gonna run later but knowing I probably wasn't going to.  So I went through my day and decided to clean instead of run, but then I said to myself "what are you doing stupid?" thinking of what a bad example I was being and went running at 9:30 even though I hate running in the dark.  The run (hospital run) was nice, cool and long and I didn't even have to stop, which was nice, and the dark was really nice too I admit. I extended the run a little, I think. I just keep thinking of all my friends at the meet and wondering how they did and I hated not being there.  It sucks thinking of missing out on everyone's accomplishments and missing out on growing with the team and with my friends.  But I hope the race was awesome and that y'all did well!

The north shore is a beautiful place, but you're probably going through a bit of an adjustment to the islands lifestyle. When my family lived in Hawaii and I was a student in Utah, I'd go visit them each summer. They'd try to keep me busy for the first few days, but it was always hard to get used to the laid-back way of life and the seeming lack of anything to do but spend time at the beach. It was always an adjustment, but I really grew to love the place. Hope you have a great experience there.

Went on a run with Jonny T Watts!! We just ran around Laie and took random roads and ran into this crazy lady that was on.... something! She talked to us for about 1/2 hour about how mormons are evil and how humble she was and crap like that... so yeah it gave us a big break and i was kind of ticked but i finished my run, running time about 52 min. JT wants to marry the funny lady!!

Today we ran the "miracle mile" where we ran out and back for what we thought in our heads was 3:59, then we ran at what min/mi pace we thought we would ran at in the meet tomorrow, so i said about 7:30.  After that we did 6 striders.  Coach K gave me frickin sweet racing flats, blue adidas, they are the shiz!  Then we cooled down in the pool and drank chocolate milk.

We had a race today, the BYUH invitational, it was my first race so i was kind of nervous!  It was a 5k and it was kind of hard... the course is good though, it has a big gradual uphill and two nice big downhills.  I ran in some adidas racing flats that coach k gave me yesterday.  I felt really good on the first lap (it is 2 laps) and on the second one i felt myself get a lot slower.  It was really hard to breathe the air especially when we went into the trees, because the air was so dense and humid.  My time was around 21:57 I think, which isn't great but it gives me a lot of room to improve once the season picks up a little.

Race today!  It was the exact same course as last week so it helped knowing the course I was running.  Today I went really strong on the first lap and again not so strong on the second.  I did a lot better than last week though, I don't know my time but last week I got 20th place and this week I got 13th and the race was against the exact same people.  I came in right behind Veronica like I did last week, but last week she swallowed a bug and spent some time on the side of the course trying to hack it out. so yeah i did better!

I'm putting in 2 miles because it was a 2 mile effort even if i didn't run that much.  It was hills today but I came to practice late so everyone had already gone off on the run, so coach k took me into the fitness center and stood by me while i ran hills on the treadmill.  it actually wasn't bad, i think i only did 5 in the end because I got wimpy.

I just found out my time from the race last saturday, 20:53!  That is a minute faster than the week before. Alright!

The course today was so beautiful, it ran right alongside the ocean. It was on a military base too which was even cooler. The other Hawaii teams, BYU Provo, and I think a team from California were there. I pushed it hard for the first 2ks but felt myself dying a little after that. I think I could have pushed a lot harder toward the end but I wasn't sure if it actually was the end or not. I was way tired from staying up until 4:30 the night before (I had to wake up at 5:00) but I think that I ran well despite lack of sleep... but I still think I could have done better.

Hey, we both ran races on very little sleep! Way to go Ally - I did a little math with your time and had you run that same pace for a whole 3 miles, you would've run a 20:20 and if you'd run a 5k at that pace, you would've run a 21:01! Great job! Hope Hawaii is treating you well, I miss you lots! Love you!

So basically i am a big slacker at logging my miles.  This day was Pacific West Conference in Belmont, California.  I am not really sure of my time but i think it was in the 20:50s.  It was a really fun course, but hard.  It would be a lot more fun to just run.  But it was really beautiful and I was lucky to be able to go and run it!  There were a lot of hills in this course.  I started out really fast and then died, then had some off and on energy then picked it up at the end.  The girls team got 2nd and the boys got 3rd.  We had the first finishers in both races!  Amanda and Golden.  Dixie state was there so I got to see Justin Decker!  It was a fun day and I felt like I could have done better on my race but I think thats just cuz I need to plan it out better.  I finished 5th on my team this day which is good cuz usually i am the 6th runner.

I ran three miles today!  At this exact time next week I will be in a car on my way to the airport to get on a plane to Las Vegas where I will be picked up and driven to St. George and will be able to run with all of my friends!  And not take any more finals!  Yay.

i'm not sure if this run was eight miles... but if it wasn't then it who really cares.  This was the most amazing run EVER!! We went up to Mala Kahana Falls (not sure about spelling), it was amazing.  The way up was pretty tough, a lot of uphill, and I had to stop a lot because I have gotten a little out of shape.  It was really muddy and slippery.  There were parts where it was like you were going through a maze, once where there are little trees really close on either side of you and a path cut through and a long way like that where you are running through tall bushes with a path cut through.  When we got to the falls we played around for a bit!  We jumped off this one waterfall (scary!), which falls into a pool that has another waterfall off of it.  Then we went to the other ones...we had to literally climb up the waterfall with ropes and it was crazy, and that led up to a really tall waterfall on a cliff face, and it was SOOO beautiful!  It was amazing.  We also gathered lilikoi before we went up and made lilikoi juice at Joseph's house, mmmmm.  This was me, Joseph, Nate, Golden, and Tommy.  Fun day!

Wow I just realized you have a lot of accomplishments! Especially the fact that you're an aunt 12 times over, AND put up with that many siblings! I hope I can be as cool as you one day (going to be a pseudo-uncle in January) for the first time!! i'm excited.

Can not wait to see you :-)

From Benn on Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 07:39:46

Well my girlfriend of like 3 yrs is going to be an aunt because her brother and sister in law are having a daughter in january; so I guess it makes me kind of a semi-uncle, or at least an unofficial uncle?

Green springs run, ran with Jeffie and Ryan there but turned around while they went ahead.  Running has gotten harder as I've gotten fatter! Hehe

Bank run with Jeff.  Ran the first four miles well but stopped a few times on the fifth mile.  It was hard, but Jeff was nice and ran with me most of the way, which helped a lot!

Bleh! This run was way harder than it should have been... feeling out of shape and slow.  Ran the 2450 loop from my mom's house.  Took 26 minutes something.

Ran with Jeff from his house on 2450, went up to telegraph then down mall drive, turned on riverside dr and up 2450.  I think I ran pretty well considering being all fat from Christmas and not being in really good shape.  It was a pretty good run overall.  Time was 31:37.

Went on a run by myself, Dogpound from my mom's house.  I am more estimating the mileage but I think that is about right.  It was a good run, I feel a billion times better, kind of like I am getting back into shape.  : ) Total run time 34:31
